About

My name is Bodhi and I have had an interest in marine animals since I was little. Most mornings, I will be paddling at Manly Beach, or chasing the elusive Giant Cuttlefish in Winter. I take what I've seen in the water to build apps to understand these unique ecosystems better.

7-Day Snorkeling Forecast

Using real time weather and marine conditions forecasts to predict the probability of finding marine life.

Species Predictor

My project integrates my own snorkeling experience with a model that predicts which marine species are likely to show up based on weather and seasonal patterns.

In the future I plan to:

1. Expand the app to other snorkeling sites around Sydney
2. Let other people upload their own snaps.

Three chapters from the bay

Every snorkel tells a story. These are the moments that shaped this project — from the first time I saw a Blue Groper up close, to realising I could turn field observations into code.

First Encounter

The water was 22 degrees and crystal clear. I had no idea what I was looking at — just flashes of colour darting between the kelp. That first snorkel at Cabbage Tree Bay changed everything. I came out of the water with a head full of questions and no way to answer them.

The Groper

It took three weeks before I could reliably spot a Blue Groper. They are everywhere once you know what to look for — big, blue, and surprisingly friendly. One followed me for ten minutes, checking me out as much as I was checking him out.

Observation: Blue Gropers are protogynous hermaphrodites — they start life female and transition to male.

Chapter 3

From Field to Code

The notebook filled up fast. Dates, times, tide states, species counts — all scribbled in waterproof pencil. One rainy weekend I started digitising it all, and realised I had enough data to build something useful. The predictor was born from soggy notebook pages.

Observation: 200+ dives logged. 80+ species catalogued. One very wet notebook.
